The benefits of keeping a business journal

Some of the benefits of this practice include:

  • Tracking Your Progress

Keeping a journal means having to jot down whatever’s going on within your company. You write down what has happened within the day or week, and highlight the accomplishments that you’ve reached so far. This is a great habit to acquire because writing down milestones is a fantastic way to track progress.

  • Identifying strengths and weaknesses

Keeping a journal will allow you to look back on how you’ve steered your business. You can look at the parts when progress shot up and see what you did right. At the same time, you can also note where you lost footing and figure out what you did wrong… so you can avoid doing it again and more importantly, IMPROVE on it. Did you price your services too high? Do you need more employees? A journal will help you target and solve these problems.

  • Setting new goals and exploring new possibilities

Once you’ve determined your current standing, the next step is for you to determine where you want your company to go. Because your journal helped you to track progress, now you can easily determine what you want to do next.

Tips to remember

Now that you know why you should keep a business journal, here are some tips to remember:

  • Find a medium that’s right for you

Those who weren’t blessed with the talent to write well need not be afraid. A journal doesn’t have to be a literary masterpiece. It can be made up of just notes and bullet points. It can even be electronic using apps, software programs, or blogs. Choose the medium that you’re most comfortable with and stick to it.

  • Determine who has access to the journal

Will it be just for your own viewing? Will you share it with business partners? Will your spouse see it? What will happen if it falls on the wrong hands? Figure out who can access the journal and make sure that it’s a trustworthy person who will not jeopardize your business.

  • Set a schedule

If you decide to keep one, you should update it RELIGIOUSLY. Set a schedule for when you will update your journal because if you don’t, you’ll easily forget about the task and lose the great benefits of having it.
